I've been wondering about this for a while, and want to know what you think about it.

Because I tag my fic, I have to choose which way I'm going to format the pairing name; as in, is it Sierra/Echo or Echo/Sierra? And I don't really know how I do it. I chose Echo/Sierra, for example, I think because Echo's the starring character - but what about characters who are pretty much equal in role, like Boyd and Topher?

Also, since I don't do smooshy pairing names (like Spuffy or Spangel), I don't really know how those get chosen. One assumes that sound plays the biggest factor, but what is the methodology behind all that?

So I'm polling the audience, because curiosity can only be cured by asking other people's opinions.

[Poll #1368447]

Please leave comments explaining your opinions, especially if you chose 'Other' or have insight into how smooshy names get chosen.

It really depends for me. I tend to put my fave character first, or actually now that I think about it, guy first in a guy/girl ship...

some of what I used to write was like, House/Cuddy. Rob/Stella (Italian job)

For How I met your mother I do like... Barney/Lily
NEVER Barley or any smoosh like that... but I would do

BROTP for barney robin, because it's a play on BRO and BR (barney and robin's initials) smooshed with "OTP"

so... it depends. I think once I just threw down whoever's point of view the story was in first, followed by the other person...

it's weird.

I have a feeling most people do it kind of randomly like that, but I hold out hopes for someone who has a crazy bad-ass system I can copy. XD

hahah nope, don't think so

put dom first, then the more passive, I guess...

but once you do one, be consistent so you don't have like four tags for the same pairing...

Yeah, so far I'm okay with the consistency since I have like no repeated pairings yet. XD

Well, you asked...

Oh! I'd forgotten all about your crazy bad-ass system - possibly because all of the smooshy names made my head hurt so much that I just blocked it from my memory. XD

in het ships, girl first, guy second.

Huh - that's interesting. Most people who've commented have seen to gone with the guy first thing because the guy is 'more dominant'.

Thanks for your opinion!

I actually thought about this a lot since I posted and realized that, if there's a squished name generally assumed to be 'correct' among the fandom, then I put them in that order, unsquished. Otherwise, girl first. I really can't stand squishy names for some reason, though.

I'm definitely not a big fan of squishy names - aside from obvs ones like Spuffy or Spander (in the BtVS fandom), they're usually confusing and not used very often, which makes it awkward to use them. I use the 'char/char' format because you can always tell what you mean.
